12 Jyotirlinga Darshan | Kashi Vishwanath Temple - Varanasi, UP The Kashi Vishwanath Temple in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh is home to the Vishwanath Jyotirlinga shrine, which is perhaps the most sacred of Hindu shrines. It is also one of the Padal Petra Stalam of Vada Naadu mentioned in Thevaaram. The temple is situated in Varanasi, the holiest city for Hindus, where a Hindu is expected to make a pilgrimage at least once in his life, and if possible, also pour the remains of cremated ancestors on the River Ganges. The temple stands on the western bank of the holy river Ganges, and is one of the twelve Jyotirlingas. In fact, it is a place where Shakti peeta and Jyotirlingam are together. It is the holiest of all Shiva temples. The main deity is known by the name Vishwanath or Vishweshwara meaning Ruler of the universe. There has been a lot of infrastructure development in Varanasithat has happened in the last 2 to 3 years, which I noticed when I visited during this tour. We started our day at 6.30 am and were exploring Banaras till 9 pm in the evening. This video was shot on 3rd August 2022, It was my second visit to varanasi, below are the activities which we did throughout the day. Breakfast at Chachi ki Dukaan - We had Kachori with sabji - 4 pc Kachori with Sabji Rs 40 & Jalebi Rs 20 for 100 gm. Timing morning 5:30 till 9:30 am in lanka area, It is located about 500 m from BHU. This shop is quite famous amongst locals. Pappu Tea Stall - Tea Rs 12 - It is also 80 year old shop, It is famous. Recently PM Modi stop by tried tea of this shop. Shri Kashi Vishwanath Temple - I was quite curious to visit this temple, as I have read a lot about the infrastructural development & watched several videos of Shri Kashi Vishwanath temple. Lunch at Popular Baati Chokha - Meal Rs 70 (1pc of Baati Chokha with Daal Rice) Sankat Mochan Temple - Around 500 year old temple is dedicated to lord hanuman, It is believed the vigraha of lord hanuman is swayambhu to give darshan to Saint goswami Tulsidas. Tulsi Ghat - This ghat one of the popular ghats of varanasi, where Saint Goswami Tulsidas lived & written Ram charit Manas. Gopal Mandir - This is located in narrow lanes of Thatheri Bazar, it is dedicated to Lord krishna. One can feel a very positive vibe in this temple. Shree Jee sweets - Just few metres away from Gopal mandir, another popular sweets shop. We had Malai Poori - Rs 35 per pc, Kulfi in kulhad - Rs 50, Chenna Payas - Rs 40 for 100 gm. Then we went back to our hotel - Varanasi Inn - Rs 2800 for double occupancy. Varanasi junction is around 2 km from this hotel. Look at this temple, this is Ratneshwar Mahadev temple located in Varanasi, also known as Kashi Karvat, in fact, this temple is more tilted than Italy's famous Leaning Tower of Pisa, some things say that before 1860 this temple was quite straight but due to its weight it tilted later, while according to a legend it was built by a servant of Raja Man Singh for his mother and when it was completed, the servant was happy and said that He has paid off his mother's debt. (subscribe on our channel to stay updated with Kashi) The city of Kashi is famous for the shrine of Kaal Bhairav, the kotwal of Kashi or the policeman of Varanasi. His presence evokes fear, no different from some of our policemen. He has a thick moustache, rides a dog, wraps himself in tiger skin, wears a garland of skulls, has a sword in one hand and in another hand holds the severed head of a criminal. People go to his shrine to do jhaad — sweeping of hex. Hex means the disruption of one's aura through witchcraft (jadoo-tona) and malefic gaze (drishti or nazar). Black threads and iron bracelets are sold in shops around the temple, offering Kaal Bhairav's protection to the devotee. The story goes that Shiva took the form of Bhairava to behead Brahma who became arrogant after creating the world. Brahma's head seared into Shiva's palm and he wandered the Earth chased by Brahma-hatya, the infamy of killing the creator. Shiva finally descended from Kailas southwards along the river Ganga. A point came when the river turned north. At this point, he dipped his hand in the river, and Brahma's skull became undone and Shiva was thus liberated form Brahma-hatya. This became the site of the famous city of Avimukta (site where one is liberated) which is now called Kashi. It is said that the city stands on Shiva's trident. Shiva stayed here as the guardian, driving away all those who threaten the city, protecting its inhabitants. The idea of eight Bhairavs guarding the eight directions (four cardinal and four ordinal) is a common theme in various Purans. In the south, many villages have the shrine of 8 Vairavar (local name for Bhairav) in the eight corners of the village. Bhairava is thus acknowledged as the guardian god. For many centuries, this temple was a spiritual center in Kashi for the most severe of Shiva ascetics, the "Kapalis" or "Skull-Bearers," and their later descendants, the Gorakhnathis. Today, however, the temple is no longer the exclusive domain of such extremist yogis and is, rather patronized by ordinary householders for his protective blessings. Old timers in Kashi believe whenever residents of Kashi leave the city for short journeys, they worship Kaal Bhairav[taking his permission] and on return back to Kashi, they again worship Kaal Bhairav. It is said that those living in or visiting Kashi, must worship Kaal Bhairav and he in turn, grants protection/shelter to all his devotees.
