An underground salt mine at a depth of 300 meters in the town of Soledar in Donetsk region of Ukraine, is open for tourists. It is a part of the "Salt Symphony" health resort. In the mine one can walk through underground labyrinths, and get healthier breathing healing air. Russia's defence ministry has said fighting is continuing in Soledar in eastern Ukraine, despite earlier claims by the head of the Russian mercenary group, Wagner, that his forces had taken the town. The town is seen as strategically significant, as it could be used by Russian forces as a place from which to launch a fresh assault on the city of Bakhmut, which has been the scene of fierce fighting for weeks. Ukraine has refuted Russian claims it has captured the eastern town of Soledar. Russia said it had repelled a massive Ukrainian attack along the eastern front near Bakhmut. The attack took place in the direction of the town of Soledar, along a line of contact that stretched over 95 kilometers. After months of intense fighting, Russia says it's captured the eastern Ukrainian town, of Soledar. The area's been pounded for weeks by Russian fire. It's seen some of the most intense battles of the war. Ukraine denies Russia has full control, saying its forces continue to resist. It's the first town in Ukraine that Russia has claimed to have captured since July 2022. It’s seen months of military setbacks. Russia’s defence ministry has confirmed that Kyiv carried out “offensive actions” in the area of Soledar, near Bakhmut. Russia’s MoD said up to 40 tanks and more than 1,000 Ukrainian troops were involved in the “offensive operations” in the Soledar direction. Ukraine and Russia are locked in an information war as well as a deadly struggle on the ground in Soledar, a salt mining town in Ukraine’s eastern Donetsk region, at the end of the 46th week of the war. The Wagner Group’s mercenaries have been fighting to take Soledar for weeks in an apparent effort to encircle Bakhmut, 10km (four miles) to the south, which has been the focus of Russian offensive operations since September. The videos showcased a captured weapons storage depot said to be inside part of the mine complex which was recently captured by Russian private military contractor unit Wagner. Russian forces are on the brink of capturing the Donetsk town of Soledar, where two British volunteers went missing while evacuating stranded civilians from the frontline. Pro-Russian military bloggers reported that the Wagner mercenaries had broken the frontline in Soledar and were fighting with Ukrainian troops in the town. As fierce fighting raged in and around Soledar, Volodymyr Zelensky, Ukraine’s president warned the ground was littered with Russian corpses and the city almost completely destroyed. Yevgeny Prigozhin, the head of Wagner, and a close ally of Vladimir Putin, on Tuesday said his forces were engaged in heavy fighting on the western outskirts of Soledar. MOMENT Ukrainian troops ambush Wagner mercenaries with machine guns and aerial attacks in Soledar, near Bakhmut. This remarkable footage shows Ukraine’s border guards and a mechanised brigade unit of the AFU greeting a group of Wagner Group mercenaries in Soledar in early January (2023). The Ukraine Special Operations Forces on Friday (Jan. 20) released a new video that shows urban fighting to recapture Soledar in the Donetsk region. “When Russian commanders drove their subordinates to the slaughter despite colossal losses, our soldiers used it as an opportunity to thin the ranks of the enemy as much as possible,” said the special forces on Telegram. “Units of the Special Operations Forces continue their work in this direction, expertly destroying the Russian invaders,” it added. Russia's Defense Ministry said on Friday that its forces had taken control of the Ukrainian salt-mining town of Soledar in Donetsk region on Thursday, state media reported. It added that Russia's capture of the town would allow its troops to cut off Ukrainian forces from the nearby, much larger town of Bakhmut. The Kremlin has made capturing the industrial Donetsk region its primary objective after nearly one year of fighting, having been forced to abandon more ambitious goals like seizing the capital, Kyiv, and ousting Ukraine's government. Meanwhile, Ukrainian officials denied that Russia controls Soledar. According to the spokesperson of the eastern group of the Ukrainian Armed Forces, "severe" fighting is ongoing in the town, and Ukrainian troops continue to hold the defense. Der ukrainische Präsident Wolodymyr Selenskyj hat die Lage in der schwer umkämpften Stadt Soledar im östlichen Gebiet Donezk als hoch angespannt beschrieben. «Es ist sehr schwer: Es sind dort kaum noch intakte Wände übrig», sagte Selenskyj in seiner Videobotschaft in der Nacht zum Dienstag mit Blick auf die ukrainischen Soldaten in der stark zerstörten Stadt. Auch seine Vize-Verteidigungsministerin Hanna Maljar sprach von massiven russischen Angriffen. Bundeskanzler Olaf Scholz (SPD) verteidigte unterdessen seinen Kurs bei der militärischen Unterstützung der Ukraine. Die US-Regierung erklärte die finanzielle Unterstützung für das angegriffene Land trotz veränderter Mehrheitsverhältnisse im Kongress für gesichert. Dienstag ist der 321. Tag des russischen Angriffskrieges. Ukraine meldet schwere russische Angriffe auf östliche Stadt Soledar Ungeachtet der schwierigen Lage versicherte Selenskyj: «Auch wenn die Besatzer jetzt ihre größten Anstrengungen auf Soledar konzentriert haben, wird das Ergebnis dieses schweren und andauernden Kampfes die Befreiung unseres gesamten Donbass sein.» Der Widerstand der ukrainischen Soldaten in Soledar verschaffe der ganzen Armee Zeit, so der Staatschef. «Die Schlacht um den Donbass dauert an.» Zuvor hatte auch die stellvertretende Verteidigungsministerin Maljar von anhaltend schweren Angriffen der Russen auf Soledar berichtet. «Nach einem erfolglosen Versuch, Soledar im Gebiet Donezk zu erobern, hat der Feind sich umgruppiert, seine Taktik geändert und einen neuen, heftigen Angriff gestartet», schrieb Maljar auf Telegram. Im Einsatz seien auf russischer Seite vor allem Mitglieder der berüchtigten Söldner-Gruppe Wagner. Soledar und das benachbarte Bachmut sind Teil des ukrainischen Verteidigungswalls vor dem Ballungsraum zwischen Slowjansk und Kramatorsk. Die Einnahme dieses Gebiets wäre aus russischer Sicht ein bedeutender Schritt hin zur Eroberung des gesamten Donbass - eines der Kriegsziele des Kremls.
