Every Fenix 7 new feature examined with real-world testing! From new maps to better GPS accuracy, I dive into whether it's really worth the extra cash. This review is instead focused almost entirely on the Fenix 7 series, which includes the Fenix 7S, 7, and 7X models. These units get a slate of new features (depending on which exact model you choose), including everything from workout stamina tracking to free downloadable TopoActive maps. And the 7X even gets a flashlight, which might sound gimmicky at first, but seriously – it’s mind-bogglingly useful and way more advanced than ‘just a flashlight’. It can flash white and red as you run, matched to your cadence – specific to showing white lights while forward-facing, and red lights rearward facing. Yes, actually switching and matched to each footstep. Or, you can signal for SOS with it when you’re out of ice cream. But we’ll get into all those details and plenty more throughout this review. I’ve been testing the Fenix 7 for quite some time, and have put in countless hours to figure out what works well…and what still might need some love. Garmin is seemingly on a roll the past 7-10 days, with having released the much-anticipated firmware bringing all the new Fenix 7 Pro & Epix Pro features to the non-Pro editions, via a new public beta firmware update. Buy the Fenix 7 Pro here (🤍 link helps support the channel! This follows the big Forerunner 255/955 update early last week, then the even bigger Instinct 2 series update late last week. I’d say maybe we’ll even get a Venu 2 update on Sunday, but then that’d be just crazy talk. This update adds in virtually all of the new software features launched last month on the Epix Pro and Fenix 7 Pro series, which Garmin said at the time they expect to remain largely identical for the time being. Certainly, the Pro versions have newer hardware (notably a much different optical HR sensor), so at some point those will diverge, but for now they remain all linked together. In fact, with this update we even get some new features not previously launched on the Pro editions, including the new ‘Workouts’ app seen just announced on the FR255/955, as well as the new ‘Gaming’ profile. Plus now getting Backup & Restore and a bunch of other items With that, here’s all the newness arriving in this update to the Fenix 7 & Epix units (this beta also includes the Pro units too, since there’s a few new features there as well). I spent the last week scientifically checking the accuracy of the health metrics that the Garmin Fenix 7 provides. Because, if I spend 700 dollars on a smartwatch, I want to make sure it accurately keeps track of my health. I tested the heart rate monitor, the sleep tracking, the SpO2 measurements and GPS. And, I must say, after all that testing I have mixed feelings about this watch. I think there is a group of people for which it could make sense to spend 700 dollars on this watch. However, I also think that for the majority of people, there are probably cheaper alternatives out there, both from Garmin and from other brands, that probably provide more value. Therefore, I will also briefly compare the Fenix 7 to the Garmin Venu 2, Garmin Vivimove Sport and Apple Watch Series 7 Conclusions: As I mentioned before, I have mixed feelings about the Fenix 7. Taking into account all features, the health tracking of the Fenix 7 has both positives and negatives. The GPS tracking seems great, and the heart rate tracking is pretty good. The oxygen saturation measurements are only so-so, and the sleep stage tracking is not very good. From the sleep tracking I would only trust the total time asleep. Looking at it from this limited scope, all of these things combined do not warrant a 700 dollar price tag. However, in addition to the health features, the Fenix 7 has a number of other features, one of the most important being the built-in maps. This could be extremely valuable for people that go hiking or skiing a lot. This means there is definitely a group of people out there for which this watch might be the best choice. It might be that you just need OK health features, and that the additional features, like the maps, and the incredible battery life are the most important. However, I do think that for many of you that are just looking to track your general health and daily workouts, the Fenix 7 is overkill, and there are better or cheaper devices you could select. Take for instance the Garmin Venu 2, this has good heart rate tracking and many of the same health features, and you can likely find it for half the price of the Fenix 7. I’ll link a video on that watch up here. As a smartwatch and heart rate tracker, the Apple Watch is definitely much better than the Fenix 7, but keep in mind that the battery life is not very good. Check out those videos right here. The Huawei Watch GT 3 also has a great heart rate tracker, and is about a third of the price of the Fenix 7. So, whilst there is definitely a market for the Fenix 7, I would really recommend you consider if you need the more advanced features it provides. The Apple Watch Ultra has been a fantastic product for me, without a doubt the highlight in 2022. But Garmin produces incredible smartwatches too such as the Garmin Fenix Pro and Epix Pro. In this video I share my findings after trying the Fenix Pro Titanium Solar and the Epix Gen 2.
