travel videos & photos at: 🤍 with text, maps & links. The world's happiest people live in Finland, according to many surveys. So let's take a look at Helsinki to find out what's going on here. Why are these people so happy? They will say it's more a matter of being content, being satisfied with their lives rather than giddy, ha-ha happy all the time and that's because their society functions very well. You will find many comments down below that debate this issue, many from locals with a different opinion about happiness here. One correction on taxation, I mentioned income tax is 57%, but this is only for the multi-millionaires. Normal income tax is like most other European countries, 25-30%. The economy is strong, the educational levels are high, there is a decent level of economic equality, and the society provides services such as health and medical, retirement pensions, and cleaning up the cities and maintaining the infrastructure that makes everything work beautifully together. So the residents are very happy about all of that. Another reason why their life is good is this city is a beautiful place. It has lovely buildings. It's nicely designed with plenty of sidewalk cafés and outdoor activities for those warm summer months, good streets, lots of bicycle paths, and pedestrian areas with enough urban density to provide those walkable neighborhoods and shops and cafés nearby, but it's not crowded. Helsinki's town planners have created a livable city that was praised at one time by the Harvard Architectural Digest as the best-designed city in Europe. July is an excellent time to visit because the weather is at its best. The city is not crowded, and hotel rates tend to drop. That's because July is the peak month for locals to take their vacations, either at their summer cottages in the Finnish countryside, or elsewhere in Europe, especially on the sunny beaches of the Mediterranean Sea. Business travel also grinds to a halt in July, leaving hotels looking for customers and lowering their rates to attract the few remaining travelers. All of the scenes in this video were photographed during the month of July, which is when I always bring my groups to visit there. While I tell you a bit more about Helsinki and Finland, I'll continue showing some scenes of the city, focusing for now on Esplanade Park that most popular green space in the heart of town. During July temperatures are quite mild, usually in the 70s, so it does not get hot, because Helsinki is so far north, as nearly as high as Anchorage, Alaska. At the peak of summer you get 20 hours of sunshine. There will still be plenty of locals in town for you to mingle with, if you so choose, and you'll find that most of them are friendly and fluent in English, and they like spending time outdoors on the streets, in the cafés and parks, enjoying that fleeting good weather. You can imagine when there's 20 hours of sunshine in the middle of summer they truly enjoy taking advantage of the summers. Although Helsinki is in a relatively remote position in northern Europe, it's easy to get here by flying, or many people come by ship, perhaps on a cruise of Scandinavia, or you can come here on a two-hour ferry ride from Tallin, Estonia, just across the Gulf of Finland, which is a branch of the Baltic Sea. Surprisingly, Finland is not part of Scandinavia, nor are they related ethically to the Slavic people of Russia, which borders them to the East. Instead, they are grouped with Scandinavia as Nordic cultures. Somehow the Finnish language is most closely related to Hungarian, although it's really not clear how this happened. The two main ethnic groups in the country are Finnish and Swedish, so the country has two official languages, with many street signs labeled with both Finnish and Swedish. But 88 percent of Helsinki natives speak Finnish as their first language, and nearly all of them speak fluent English. You'll have no trouble communicating with the Finnish people. Children begin their schooling in kindergarten and by age 9, they start foreign language training with French and German currently the most popular choices. English had been the number-one preference until Finland's entry into the European Union. At age 13, students who speak Finnish as their first language start learning Swedish, and vice a versa. By age 14. Most students begin learning a fourth language. Thanks partly to the excellent education system, Finland has one of the strongest economies in the world. Recently ranked as number-two for competitiveness and they're in the world's top 10 for good environmental policies. Finland is the first country in the world to prepare plans for a National Circular Economy. Have you heard of that, Circular Economy? It's basically recycling, reusing, repairing, lower consumption, protecting the environment from climate change, pollution, waste and loss of biodiversity. That's another reason why people here are so happy.

In November 1939, the USSR invaded Finland after this country refused to give up some territory that the Soviets demanded. The aggressors deployed at least 2500 aircraft against a handful of outdated aircraft operated by the Finns. Initially, they relied on Fokker D.XXI, a Dutch fixed landing gear monoplane but as the war began, they acquired whatever type they could get their hands on. One such type was the Gloster Gladiator, a British biplane. Outdated almost as soon as it entered service, thirty examples were soon put to good use. Slow but very maneuverable, it could be very effective against Soviet fighters, many of which were biplanes too. The Winter War between Finland and the USSR would produce quite a few aces on the Finnish side and the first Gladiator ace was Oiva Tuominen. This NCO pilot first joined the Air Force as a mechanic but soon became a pilot and demonstrated that an outdated biplane could be effective against enemy fighters as well as bombers. Tuominen would continue flying against the Soviets throughout the WWII and end up as the fifth most successful Finnish ace. Disclaimer: The Finnish swastika symbol (Hakaristi) is present on my model in order to make it historically accurate, not because i want to promote or endorse the ideology of Nazi-Germany or any associated right wing association of the past and the present. Für exotische Fahrzeuge der Achsenmächte bin ich immer zu haben! Diesmal habe ich mir den finnischen BT-42 vorgenommen, von dem es einen sehr schönen Bausatz von Tamiya gibt. Die Alternative von Eastern Express sollte man möglichst vermeiden. Der Grundbausatz des BT-7 von Tamiya war mir schon durch ein früheres Projekt bekannt und so wusste ich schon vorher, dass mir ein unbeschwertes Bastelerlebnis bevorstehen würde. Der Bausatz ist schön detailiert und äußerst passgenau. Einzig das Kanonenrohr sollte man ersetzen, denn das Plastikteil wirkt leider sehr grob. Ich habe stattdessen ein Alurohr von Aber verwendet. Außerdem habe ich dem Modell Metallketten von AK Interactive verpasst, wobei diese Maßnahme nicht unbedingt notwendig ist, da die Segmentketten des Bausatzes auch sehr schön aussehen. Für die Lackierung des Modells habe ich Acrylfarben von Revell verwendet. Die grüne Grundfarbe wurde mit der Airbrush aufgetragen, die Farben Matt 84 "Lederbraun" und Matt 88 "Beige" wurden dagegen mit dem Pinsel aufgebracht, um so ein scharfkantiges Tarnmuster zu bekommen. Ich bin nämlich zu faul, um alles sorgfältig abzukleben! Gealtert wurde das Modell in der Hauptsache mit Ölfarben, Erde aus dem Garten und Pigmenten. Die Äste auf dem Panzer stammen von MiniNatur. Natürlich brauchte das Modell auch einen kleinen Dioramasockel. Der besteht aus einem Holzbrett, das außen mit Balsaholzplatten eingefasst wurde. In das Innere wurde eine Styroporplatte geklebt. Für die Pflasterstraße habe ich Steine von Gero Design verwendet, der Bretterzaun komm von Plusmodel. Die Komponenten des Dioramas wurden ebenfalls mit Acrylfarben bemalt und mit Erde aus dem Garten verschmutzt. Die Grasbüschel stammen von Vallejo, MiniNatur und Noch, der Baum kommt von Coniferi Silvis. Die Figur des finnischen Panzersoldaten stammt von The Bodi und wurde mit Acrylfarben von Revell, Andrea und Lifecolor bemalt. The alternative by Eastern Express should be avoided. The BT-7 by Tamiya, which is the basis of this kit, was already known to me due to an earlier project, so i knew that i could expect some happy benchtime. The kit is well detailed and fits together without any issues. One should only replace the gun barrel, because the plastic part of the kit is really chunky looking. I replaced it with a metal gun barrel by Aber. In addition i added metal tracks by AK Interactive, but this is not really a necessary measure, since the segmented tracks of the kit are pretty good. To paint the model i used acrylics by Revell. The green base color got applied with the airbrush, the colors Matt 84 "leather brown" and Matt 88 "beige" were applied with the brush in order to achieve a camo pattern with sharp edges. I am simply too lazy to mask it all off! For the weathering of the model i used mostly oil paints, earth from my garden and pigments. Of course the model needed a diorama base as well. It consists of a wooden board, which got framed with balsawood. The interior got filled with a styrofoam plate. For the paved road i used individual stones by Gero Design, the fence is by Plusmodel. The components of the diorama got painted with acrylics as well and also got weathered with oil paints and earth from my garden. The grass tufts are by Vallejo, MiniNatur and Noch, the tree came from Coniferi Silvis. The figure of the Finnish tanker is by The Bodi and got painted with acrylics by Revell, Andrea and Lifecolor. It was constructed from captured Soviet BT-7 light tanks and British 4.5-inch howitzers from 1918, which had been donated during the Winter War. Only eighteen vehicles were constructed. The BT-42 was used for the first time in 1943, where it was used against enemy pillboxes. The design worked reasonably well against soft targets but was completely unsuitable for anti-tank warfare. The BT-42s were used again during the major Soviet offensive in 1944. They were deployed in the defence of Vyborg. In one encounter, a Finnish BT-42 hit a Soviet T-34 18 times, failing even to immobilize the enemy vehicle, as this vehicle's fuses failed to work correctly. Finland found itself with nearly 200,000 Mosin Nagant rifles in its possession after breaking away from Russian rule in 1917, and those rifles would for the basis of Finnish infantry arms until the adopted of a semiautomatic rifle many decades later. At first, Russian rifles were simply refurbished and rebarreled, but the Army and Civil Guard quickly found the Russian Model 1891 pattern wanting, and began to develop improvements. The two organizations managed their arm production independently, and the Army was the first to develop a new model of Mosin, in the M27. Produced from 1927 until 1940, this was a shortened (27”/68.5cm barrel) with improved furniture and sights. The Civil Guard followed shortly afterwards with their M28 short rifle. The M28 would only be produced until 1933, however, when it was replaced with the Civil Guard M28/30, which further improved the sights. Ultimately, the Army and Civil Guard would come together to design the apogee of Mosin Nagant evolution, the M39. Over 100,000 of these rifles would be made, all starting from captured or purchased receivers - the Finns never manufactured receivers themselves. If anything can be considered a transformation of a sow’s ear into a silk purse, it would be the creation of an M39 from a Russian M1891!
